Gian Luca Colombo

Gian Luca Colombo is one of the best young winemakers in Piedmont, and these wines are his personal project. He is also a consultant winemaker around the Langhe region, including at Castello di Perno, also in the Crescendo Wines portfolio. Gian Luca is a passionate advocate of sustainability in viticulture. In addition to farming biodynamically, he rears sheep, and plants trees and other plants to encourage biodiversity in a region which can frequently lack it. As for the wines: these are spectacularly pure, aromatic, individual styles while also being accessible and generous.

Gian Luca did not inherit any vineyards; he started his business in 2011, with a purchase of 0.25ha plot of Pinot Nero vines. Today he owns 1ha of vineyard (2.2 acres) and rents 4ha more (9 acres). The 5ha of vines are divided into 15 separate parcels. Each plot is vinified separately in the winery below Gian Luca’s home in Roddi, in the Barolo region. He makes five varieties: Barbera (with a considerable amount of old vine material); Pinot Nero (unusual in the region); Nebbiolo (for Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo); Dolcetto; and Pelaverga (an unusual but outstanding, aromatic, red variety from Piedmont). NU is Gian Luca’s young wine, bottled in the spring of the year following the harvest, and is an easy drinking, excellent value blend of all five of his varieties that do not find their way into the varietal wines.

Winemaking is always with a light touch, allowing the variety and vintage to speak clearly. To quote Gian Luca: “No wine follows a production protocol, each wine follows its path at each harvest, I want my wines to be able to tell the vintage from which they come, the vineyard that generated them and that's it; that's why I love to produce wines of great finesse and depth . To make my wines I need great grapes, to get great grapes I had to stop being a winemaker to become a farmer.” Each label is stamped individually with Gian Luca’s fingerprint; confirmation of his personal commitment to every bottle that bears his name.
